The starting point of business success for both individuals and organizations, lies in values clarification. Values are the priorities or guiding principles that consciously and unconsciously affect our course of action, and the quality of results we get.
When determining how to get better results in business, it is important to remember the way people think and feel determines the actions they will take, and therefore what they will accomplish. As a Leader, you must always remember that people feel the happiest, the most confident, the most effective and fulfilled, when they feel their actions are consistent with their own highest values and beliefs.
Rather than starting with a vision of what you want to achieve, and getting yourself and other people all excited about a whole bunch of crazy goals, it is best to start with a clear idea of what’s truly most important to you in each area of your business. And then share that with your team. Purpose is more inspiring and sustainable than hype.
For example, what is the ultimate purpose of your Marketing or IT department? Where is that purpose clearly stated? How is it being measured and improved? How does that department’s primary role or function align, compliment and even challenge the objectives of other departments in your organization? And what are the measurable systems and strategies that you have put in place, to keep your people happy and effective each and every day?

Your values are the Organizing Principles for yourself and for your company. They promote an internal dialogue with yourself, and an external dialogue with others, that asks “Based on what is most important, how do we handle the specific challenge or opportunity in front of us.”

When your values are in complete alignment with your vision for your company, and the objectives you’ve defined, it helps everyone at every level answer that big, old scary question “How do we proceed?”
